ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The San Francisco State University Chinese Bilingual Added Authorization Program is an approved California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) program that gives credentialed tK-12 educators the opportunity to earn a Bilingual Authorization in Cantonese or Mandarin.

With a Bilingual Authorization, tK-12 educators can teach the subject area(s) covered by their primary credential (Single, Multiple Subject, or Special Education) in two languages.

To be eligible for the SFSU Chinese Bilingual Added Authorization program, participants must satisfy the following requirements:
  1. Possess a valid California Teaching Credential with English Learner Authorization (see admissions page for details)
  2. Pass an oral and written assessment of language proficiency (in admissions interview)
  3. Show proof of completion of credential level coursework in the following areas (if not previously completed in a CTC approved credential program, courses can be completed at SFSU)
  • Teaching Reading and Language Arts Curriculum and Instruction in Science (or equivalent subject matter course)
  • Teaching Social Studies, Social Justice, and Literacy (or equivalent subject matter course focused on supporting multilingual/ bi-cultural learners)
