Thanks for reaching out. Things have been going well on my end since graduating college in Dec 2018. I went to work for Walmart.com right after graduation as a Category Analyst. I left in Aug 2020 after a reorg and just started working at Google this January. Thankfully, my employers have allowed me to work from home since last March so I've been able to keep myself and my family safe for the time being. Definitely grateful for these opportunities. I still maintain active communication with some orgs on campus, but I've mainly gotten involved with new organizations. I continue to be a mentor for post-grads and will soon be one for a high schooler at Mission High. However, when the pandemic started, I wanted to help the undocumented community with getting access to COVID-relief funds, so I worked part-time during weekends with a non-profit (Catholic Charities of the East Bay) for 3 months to help immigrants apply for funds. This project ended in August 2020, so I haven't been as active since. My new job has kept me pretty busy as I'm still in training. But I'm definitely hoping to get myself involved in new projects once I adjust to my new job. That's pretty much a quick summary of what I've been up to since my last update. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks once again for checking in. Take care and stay safe!

Thank you for reaching out, I'd love to update TACT on what I've been up to since 2019. A lot has certainly happened!
To start off, I'd love to share probably the most rewarding experience I had in college - being a part of the UCLA Table Tennis team. In fact, college table tennis was the only club I participated in all four years at UCLA. Although it had nothing to do with my academic path and career pursuits, playing ping pong with peers helped me relieve academic stress and deeply bond with students who shared the same interest as me. Moreover, it reminded me of the importance of table tennis to my own cultural identity. Perhaps some context is needed: throughout middle school and early high school, I actually pursued table tennis as a professional sport - my parents had initially introduced it to me to teach me more about Chinese culture but I ended up falling in love with the sport. Through table tennis, I was able to better my Chinese to communicate with my coaches, visit my hometown in China and train at the Fujian Provincial team, and to just fully immerse myself in Chinese culture - something I didn't quite get to do growing up in America. Unfortunately, I stopped playing in high school to focus more on academics and prepare for my college career. Since then, I felt as though I've lost part of my identity and felt sad that I lost touch with a lot of good friends. So when I started college, I joined UCLA Table Tennis hoping to get back in touch with my Chinese culture and make new friends who love the sport just as much as I do. I am forever thankful for the people I've met and played with because of college table tennis. The club provided a gateway and a safe community for all of us to connect and for some to reconnect by bonding over a common interest. These are all reasons that pushed me to become vice president and then president during my last two years at UCLA.
As for my senior capstone project, it went well! You can view a demo video of it here: https://vimeo.com/342161689. At Least I Know You’re There is an interactive, projection-mapped animation of my college experience. The project was a tribute to my four years of new experiences, challenges, ups and downs at UCLA. The final animation was projected onto a miniature-sized ping pong table. The pink ping pong ball motion can be tracked with a USB webcam attached at a hidden angle. When the ball motion is sensed, the animations on the table change. Aside from the real-time, dynamic artwork, I also designed and made prints of a multipurpose booklet that served as both a scoreboard and also an index of all the different characters shown in the animation. For my final project at UCLA, I wanted to pay homage to things I've learned and concluded during these years. This included me realizing my passion for creative technology, learning how to combine my skills in design and programming, and reconnecting with a part of my identity that I thought I had lost through ping pong.
My internships and job experiences during college were all very rewarding opportunities. The media agency was a marketing startup called AdLiven and I had so much fun designing and concepting ideas with a small but passionate team. Working with less people meant that my voice was often heard and my ideas were genuinely valued - this gave me more confidence in the career I was pursuing. I interned with AdLiven during my summer break in 2018, but later went back during winter break to work for them again because I enjoyed the job so much. At school, I was a part-time graphic designer at UCLA Center of Performing Arts. There, I had the honor of designing graphics for many talented artists around the world who came to visit UCLA. Both of these opportunities resulted in full-time offers but by the time I decided to graduate, I realized that as much as I love graphic design, I wanted to go beyond a 2D canvas. I wanted to bring designs to life and to really immersify people in captivating stories via digital experiences. This led to me taking more game design courses and learning how to create interactive spaces. Using game development, I felt that I had finally found a creative tool that was right for me. Here are two short games I made in my introduction to game design classes, both were done in two weeks so they're very short but sweet games:
- Abba's Story - inspired by my father's immigration experience
- Haolin or Helen? Chinese or American? - inspired by my childhood
In June of 2019, I graduated with a BA in Design Media Arts at UCLA. And right after graduating, I started interning as a Creative Technologist at Buck Design - a creative production company in LA. After 5 months of interning, I became a full-time employee! I have been working at Buck since then and have been loving my time here. As a Creative Technologist, I develop and explore creative ways to bring design to life using the newest technology. This could be through game development, web development or VR/AR experiences. Needless to say, I found my dream job and feel very blessed to work in this unique industry! There is still so much for me to learn so I'm very excited for what's ahead, especially with technology advancing so quickly.
And finally, I'd like to give my deepest thanks for TACT - people who believed in me and supported me through these years. I definitely couldn't have done it without TACT. It was because of TACT's support that I was able to relieve some of the financial burden I was facing and to just focus on my dreams and career goals. Thank you for continuously checking up on me :) Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe during these tough times.
Best,
Haolin Fang

I am doing well, and I hope you and everyone at TACT are also doing well.
Graduating in the middle of a pandemic and joining the workforce when unemployment was at a low was not something I ever imagined would have happened.
Since then, I went on to become the President of my professional business organization and networked with dozens of professionals while mentoring the younger classes. After graduating in June of 2020 with my bachelor’s of science in Managerial Economics, I went on to accept a full-time role as a technical recruiter for Motion Recruitment while still working part-time as a Social Media Marketing Manager for The Chairman Truck. Along with managing The Chairman Truck, I’ve moved on to manage social media for a couple more restaurants in SF Good Gais and Hawker Alley. For the time being, I plan to continue pursuing my love for marketing and my love to network with professionals while I prepare for applications for MBA programs and graduate school.
It was great connecting with you again, and I wish you the best.

Last summer with American Express was very informative and fun. I had a great time learning about the company and working on a project that was meaningful to the American Express community. Although it was completely remote, I was able to engage in meaningful conversations with my fellow coworkers and interns through online video call platforms and online games.
Things have also gotten better at home! Everyone seemed to get into the hang of remote study/work. We really value our increased family time that quarantine gave us.
To update you, I have recently chosen to pursue higher education at UCSD. Starting the end of March, I will officially be a Masters student studying computer engineering.
Hope all is well with you,
Vivian Lee

Thank you for reaching out! I am doing well! I'm still studying nutritional sciences at Cal in my junior year. I am doing remote learning back home, but I do miss Cal, especially walking to class and studying in the libraries like Doe and Moffitt. I plan to go back to study in the fall where we plan to have mostly in person instruction except for large lecture classes.
Some updates on my end, I started working at an urgent care facility back in May to gain some patient experience. I plan to apply to PA school (Physician Assistant school) next year! I am working on shadowing some PAs and gaining some experience in healthcare before applying.
I hope you are staying safe and well during these times! With the vaccine rollout, I'm hoping that we can start to be safer and we can start seeing other safely in the future.
Thank you so much for reaching out!

I hope this email finds you well, and I apologize for the late reply. My friends and family are doing well as the pandemic continues to evolve. Life at UC Merced is fine as I have been able to form friendships. It seems that Discord continues to be better than Microsoft Teams as the university's policy continues to force MS Teams on to us. I also decided to hold off on joining extracurriculars due to the amount of Zoom meetings required to attend.
Please send TACT my best regards.
Cheers,
Alex

Thank you for checking in! I am a bit more annoyed at spending so much time with my family this year compared to last, but again, I can't complain and am grateful that we are able to remain healthy and safe. And yes, I am happy with my major change. I find the classes a lot more interesting which is a really important factor in online learning. I am currently interning at a startup where I work primarily on designing the interface of their mobile app. It's a lot of fun and is a great experience. 3 people in my family have received the vaccine already, so I'm optimistic that we will soon be able to have a sense of normality soon.
Congratulations to Cynthia! Glad to hear that she's president now. Will TACT be able to host a banquet this year? Or will it likely be virtual?
Hope you and your family stay safe and that you don't get too annoyed by them!
Best,
Bryant

Thank you for your yearly check-in! I really appreciate how much the TACT Scholarship Committee is willing to follow up with former recipients to foster a caring and warm relationship. :)
I'm very thankful to the people who worked so hard to preventing the COVID-19 and making sure everyone is safe and well. Just like you and everyone else, I'm super excited and hopeful for what the future holds.
Looking back at the exchanges we made through emails in the past years, I'm amazed by how far we have gone and accomplished since the start. I originally intended to major in linguistics but was a bit overwhelmed so I decided to go for psychology. I think I have been very satisfied with this change. Additionally, I also double majored in Spanish linguistics so linguistics still remained one of my interests but with a focus on the Hispanic language instead of English.
I have already decided and started working on two honors thesis (developmental psychology and Spanish linguistics) in my senior year. In case if you're interested, the topics are: "Children's developing abilities to suspend judgment in light of disagreements with others" and "The perceptions of Mandarin accent in Spanish across Mandarin and non-Mandarin listeners."
Although the pandemic has caused some disruptions to our original daily routines and future plans, we still thrive.

Thank you for reaching out! I am glad to hear from TACT.
For me, university is going well, conducted remotely over Zoom. Classes provide a sense of normalcy and productivity during this time, and learning keeps me motivated...USF has been proactive in criticizing various inequalities during the pandemic, and though I feel there is always more to be done, it makes me happy that my university addresses the topics.
My goodwill is with TACT, the other TACT recipients, and other Asian organizations and individuals especially during the pandemic right now. Hearing of the hate crime rising across the nation as well as specifically in San Francisco is frightening. It is important to take moments to acknowledge the violence and loss which has occured...I hope all is well with you and the rest of TACT's Scholarship Committee.
Sincerely,

At university, I learned a lot of new things and met a lot of intelligent people. An interesting fact about my major, Data Science, is that I may meet a lot of people and do a lot of interesting projects. This semester, I was involved in two projects. The first project focuses on the analysis of the precision between the real measurement of the body and what we predicted; the second is about natural language processing. I am very grateful to my sponsors for helping me and supporting me as I pursue my studies; they are the one who helps me a lot in my journey. Also, I am happy to attend this year's celebration, but I will leave at 6pm because I have a presentation. Hope you stay safe!
