They are tackling prevalent Asian American, South Asian/Indian, & Pacific Islander stereotypes - what they are, how to overcome them, and how to use our voices to champion other people of color. REGISTER: https://bit.ly/2NELvBb Update 6/20: Statement translated into Chinese. The Association of Chinese Teachers mourns the senseless death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. We recognize that this was not an isolated incident, nor was it a simple case of police brutality. Mr. Floyd’s death was the direct result of systemic racial discrimination that has permeated our society for generations. TACT believes Black Lives Matter. We believe education is key to ending ignorance and hate. As educators, we have a responsibility to our students and families to dismantle anti-blackness by bringing awareness and implementing instruction that supports and empowers students to be vehicles for societal change. In the coming year, TACT is committed to strengthening our collaboration with fellow Black educators and other community organizations to promote equity in our educational system. We will continue to support teacher education, literature and instructional curriculum that questions the status quo. Finally, we recognize that our work must include helping our community, in all its diversity, to examine and reflect on racism and colorism within the Asian American community. Here, we would like to reference an article, “Why Asian Americans should care about Black Lives Matter,” written by Christine Yoon, a Trinity senior, for The Chronicle at Duke University. In it, she linked Letters for Black Lives, template letters translated in 26 languages to help us begin the conversation with our own families so that we do not willingly or unwillingly perpetuate racist oppression. Unless Black lives matter, it is empty to say all lives matter. In Solidarity, TACT Executive Board P.S. Please enjoy Glorious Years (光辉岁月), Beyond's 1991 tribute to Nelson Mandela and a call to end racism. It is widely considered one of the greatest Cantonese songs of all time.
