2022 Scholarships
1/8/23 Update from scholarship winner Fiona Gan:
Before I started applying to colleges, I knew the transition between high school and college would be tough for me. As a person that was extremely attached to my family, I definitely shed some tears after my parents left to drive six hours back home. I was determined to stay detached from UCLA because I only had one true home to return to in SF. However, UCLA’s charms were difficult to resist. First, classes were not what I expected at all. I found myself having to change many of my habits that I developed in high school. Otherwise, I would’ve been lost in the material even during the first week. Secondly, the food here is diverse and well prepared (at least according to what my friends have told me about their schools). Though, their lack of dim sum is disappointing. Lastly, though college may be a difficult time, don’t forget that everyone is experiencing the same situation you are. Everyone is homesick and maybe a little bit fearful of what the future brings. Taking that opportunity to bond with people about living a new experience can make college a little less lonely and a lot more exciting.
