Local historian Judy Yung passed away at the age of 74 on December 14, 2020. She was the librarian at the Chinatown/Him Mark Lai Branch of the Public Library in San Francisco and was at the forefront of developing an Asian American history collection.
Judy Yung retired as the Chair of The American Studies Department at UC Santa Cruz. She was also the author of Asian American history books giving emphasis to Chinese American women including Chinese Women of America: A Pictorial History and Unbound Feet: A Social History of Chinese Women in San Francisco. Another well documented and important book she co-authored with Him Mark Lai and Genny Lim was Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island,1910-1940. After her retirement in 2004, she continued her research and writings. Her most recent project was as co-curator of an exhibit on the Chinese in America at the California Museum in Sacramento. We lost an incredible mentor, a scholar, historian, and writer who gave us a deeper understanding and appreciation for Chinese American history. https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Judy-Yung-Chinatown-native-and-early-scholar-of-15823362.php TACT is a non-profit operating under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3).
