Reader's Theater - CHANG'S PAPER PONY by Eleanor Coerr
In celebrating the Year of the Horse, Maisie Dea Toy, retired teacher, selected this story about mining in the Gold Rush Days to integrate literature and history. This can be adapted for all grade levels especially beneficial to second language learners to develop reading, listening and speaking skills.
The attached picture of horse can be: 1) colored and cut out and glued to a paper plate folded in half to make a rocking horse for the primary grades or 2) same as above, but plate opens up and is used as a graphic organizer for story map or character analysis. Extension Activity: (Whole or small group activity) Brainstorm words that describe the character Chang in the story and write each of them on index cards. Get 3 pie pans to replicate pans used for mining as opposed to using a venn diagram to compare and contrast the character Chang to the students. |
